Design Goal
Do in-depth research of a power tool, understanding its mechanics & users. Create a re-design of this power tool.

Defining the User
To gain a better understanding of angle grinders, I interviewed six users of varying professions.
They provided insights on what they liked about the tool and what could be improved.

Sketches
Throughout the process I sketched dozens of angle grinders with varying forms, features & perspectives.
This helped me determine consistencies and allowed me to decide what parts could be redesigned.

Renderings & Models
Combining the needs of my interview subjects and the notes on safety standards, I went forward with final renderings and models.
After viewing the rendered sketches of angle grinders, the most popular design -by a large margin- was the first, which became the basis of my final models.

Features of the Final Model
• A powerful motor fixed at the front of the tool: Weight of tool can be used as advantage rather than user force
• A D-handle for maximum user control: Placed at the top of tool where most vibration occurs & fixes at specific angles for sturdy hold
• A stream-lined back handle for comfortable grip: The narrow grip reduces hand fatigue & rubber insets dampen vibration
• A two-swtich system for safety: Top switch turns tool on, bottom holding switch powers up the disc and will stop upon release
